The Eyes of My Temple

“You can’t always change what’s happening outside of you, but you can choose what’s happening within you.”

“If I ONLY look for what is Missing, I’ll ALWAYS miss what is Present.”

I wish I would have learned these two truths years ago… but maybe some Truths only come with grey hair.

The Gift of Gratitude…

…came knocking in a very unexpected way. If only I would have let Him in back then.

It happened one sunny morning, many years ago. I stopped at a fast food place for a cup of coffee and a sausage biscuit. But in reality, I came in to complain. Have you ever been somewhere and see someone sitting alone, but talking to themselves softly? And you think they’re a little crazy? That was me!

I didn’t like the path I was on in life, or the choices I made that led me there. And all the while, I thought I was trying to do the right thing. But life just kept getting worse… or so I thought.

While eating (and mumbling), I noticed an employee was washing the windows. As the sun shined through, we on the inside, could see ALL the spots he was missing. Then the manager came to the window from the inside, and pointed out all the areas he missed.

I felt an uneasiness stirring within me, like I was about to get “schooled”.

“You’re always looking at your Life from the outside. Always at what you DON’T have, and full of regret in what you DO have. Instead of looking at it from the inside, and listening to what I am trying to point out to you. You allow the smudges of Bitterness, Resentment, and Broken Dreams to blur your vision of life, instead of allowing Me to help you.” Said the Spirit of Gratitude.

I stopped mumbling…I stopped thinking…I stopped moving. I couldn’t deny the Voice I heard, or what my eyes just saw. I needed help to see differently. To think differently. But I had become accustomed to my complaining. I thought I had just come in for some coffee and biscuit. In reality, I was given a very special Invitation.

But regretfully, that morning, I got up and left…without opening it.

“Two men looked out from prison bars. One saw the mud, and the other saw stars.”

When Gratitude sends you an invitation…look up, see the stars, and open it.
