A Gentle Whisper
I dreamed once I was on a platform, looking out at a large stadium crowd, as if at a concert. With it, a thunder of voices ALL blending together made a noise of confusion. But within the crowd, I saw my Dad. He looked very out of place, compared to everyone around him, not because his appearance stood out from others…but that he was quieter than all the rest.
When my brothers and I were young, Dad would often softly say, “If you want to capture someone’s attention…Whisper.” (I’m sure his main motivation was to get us to stop arguing. His distraction would work!)
And in this dream, though everyone around him were waving & yelling, competing to steal my attention, he was just looking at me, softly saying something. I had to focus intently on his lips moving, to drown out the other voices. The more I concentrated on ONLY him, the better I could hear his voice…his whisper, telling me he loved me. But when I looked to the crowd beside him, though his lips would still be moving, I no longer heard him.
And I desperately wanted to hear him.
Then I awoke.
I remembered this dream recently while watching the movie “Gladiator”. There’s a scene where Ceasar wants to have an intimate conversation with Maximus. He asks Maximus to sit, close beside him and says, “Let us Whisper now, together, you and I.”
In this loud, (fast paced, quick to talk, quick to make decisions), world we live in, “intimate” conversations are becoming more rare. You have to really concentrate, pause, drown out ALL the other voices in your mind, competing to steal our attention, and sit close beside someone…to hear them.
I sense, like Ceasar, or my Dad….God’s Desire is that I would sit with Him, remove ALL the other voices in my mind, and choose to be close enough to hear His Gentle Voice say, “Let us Whisper now, together, you and I.”
